NO fewer than 2,500 youths are to benefit from the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) empowerment programme in Lagos State.

The programme tagged: Basic-national open Apprenticeship scheme, is designed to tackle mass unemployment.

A statement by NDE coordinator in Lagos, Adebowale Ologbenla, said the 2,500 beneficiaries would be trained in cosmetology, which consists of making of soaps, insecticides, air-fresheners, germicides, perfume jelly and barbing, as well as bead-stringing and GSM phone repairs.

The training, which would take place in different centres across the 20 local councils of the state would expose the trainees to theo- retical and practical aspects of their chosen vocations.

He said: “The Basic-National Open Apprenticeship Scheme is in line with one of the core mandates of the directorate, which is to design and implement programmes to combat unemployment.

“The training will last for three months and include both theory and practical. The youth empowerment programme is being executed in all the states in the federation including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

Ologbenla said the directorate was collaborating with the state government, non-governmental organisations (NGOS), Churches, Mosques and individuals on four of its core programmes.
