• 2013 - Egypt

Egypt declared a state of emergency as security forces killed 600 demonstrat­ors supporting former president Mohamed Morsi. Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mohamed Elbaradei, resigned as Egypt's interim vice president in protest — a blow to the leadership's credibilit­y.

• 2012 - Nigeria

Flooding in Plateau State caused by heavy rains killed 33 people, with many others missing, while also destroying homes, bridges and farms

• 2009 - Nigeria

Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi sacked the heads of five banks for piling up debts and poor management - Afribank, Interconti­nental Bank, Union Bank, Oceanic Bank and Finbank. Economic and Financial Crimes Commission froze the accounts of the sacked directors for running the banks into insolvency.

• 2006 - Nigeria

Nigeria handed over the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon in compliance with a Un-brokered deadline, which ended a 13-year feud.

• Ayo Daramola, member of the ruling PDP and potential guber candidate in Ekiti State, was stabbed to death in his home.
