Road mishap kills 10, in­jures 14 in Makurdi, Enugu

ONE per­son was killed with two oth­ers se­verely in­jured in a mo­tor ac­ci­dent that oc­curred at Heavy Duty Park, North Bank in Makurdi, Benue State cap­i­tal yes­ter­day morn­ing.

A truck with reg­is­tra­tion num­ber YDP 697 XA, loaded with beans was trav­el­ing to­wards Makurdi when it fell off the road and its con­sign­ment trapped the vic­tims.

Aon­dowase Nyi­ta­men, a pri­mary two pupil at LGEA Pri­mary School, Low Cost, North Bank, lost his life in the ac­ci­dent, while his mother, Mlu­mun Nyi­ta­men and one other pri­mary three pupil of the same school, Queen Torkuma, sus­tained var­i­ous de­grees of in­juries.

It was gath­ered that the ac­ci­dent oc­curred when an un­reg­is­tered tanker al­legedly over­took the truck and forced it off the road, run­ning into a ditch be­fore the truck sum­m­er­saulted.

A Lexus 300 with reg­is­tra­tion num­ber VDY 562 AA, which was parked at the scene of the in­ci­dent, was also badly dam­aged. The Spe­cial As­sis­tant to the Benue State gov­er­nor on Me­dia, Mr. Ge­of­frey Jimin, who was on his way to drop his chil­dren in school, rushed the in­jured per­sons to the emer­gency unit of the Fed­eral Med­i­cal Cen­ter, Makurdi where they are cur­rently re­ceiv­ing med­i­cal at­ten­tion.

Mean­while, an­other auto crash, which oc­curred along the Enugu–port Har­court Ex­press­way, has left nine per­sons dead and 12 crit­i­cally in­jured. The ac­ci­dent oc­curred at Ihe axis of Awgu lo­cal gov­ern­ment area at about 8:00p.m. on Sun­day.

Ac­cord­ing to the Enugu State Po­lice Com­mand spokesman, Su­per­in­ten­dent Ebere Amaraizu, the ac­ci­dent oc­curred when an ar­tic­u­lated ve­hi­cle con­vey­ing a cater­pil­lar had a head on col­li­sion with a 508 mini bus con­vey­ing pas­sen­gers be­lieved to be wor­shipers.
