Why Ishaku took inauguration of LG bosses to Takum

THepomp that attends the swearing- in of public officials eluded the new chairmen of the 16 councils in Taraba State yesterday, as Governor Darius Ishaku relocated the seat of power from Jalingo to Takum, his home council, where they took their oaths of office.

The Guardian learnt that the decision was aimed at appeasing his people, who were piqued by his inability to visit the area since the last general elections. However, the move did not go down well with the majority of the people in the state capital.

Ishaku was last seen in his hometown in February last year when he went to cast his vote in the general elections.

Apparently to escape the wrath of his people, whom The Guardian learnt were already fuming over his long absence from the community, the governor had gone there to cast his vote in the June 30 council election.

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) in the state roundly won the election that threw up 16 council chairmen and 168 councillors.

Frowning on the decision of inaugurating the council officials in Takum, some PDP members said, “If some of us have our way, we would have preferred the swearing- in to take place in Jalingo because the place is safer and more conducive.”

Preferring anonymity, majority of the party faithful, who found their way to the inauguration venue, expressed disappointment that such function was taken to Takum amid security challenges and the coronavirus disease ( COVID- 19) crisis in the state.

Apart from trying to appease his people of Taraba South, the governor, who is reportedly eyeing the zone’s senate seat in next political dispensation, was said to have embarked on the mission to curry the favour of his people.
