- From Anietie Akpan, Calabar

THE Nigerian Copyright Commission ( NCC) and Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria ( APCON) have committed to exploring joint manpower development and Alternative Dispute Resolution ( ADR) to uphold copyright best practices for sustainable development of the advertising and creative industries.

Chief Executives of both regulatory agencies, Director- General of NCC, Mr.

John O. Asein, and Registrar of APCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, who announced this in Abuja, indicated that a Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU) to facilitate implementation of the inter- agency collaboration would be finalised urgently.

During a consultative meeting at the Commission’s Headquarters, the Chief Executives stated that a simple copyright manual on professional advertising would be developed to assist practitioners to function legally with minimal or no copyright infractions.

According to them, the modalities of the MOU on manpower training and appropriate rights clearance for proper exploitation of copyright works in the advertising industry would be finetuned at an upcoming webinar.

THE University of Calabar ( UNICAL) in partnership with Teacher Essien Ita Itam Educational Trust Fund has launched an initiative tagged Operation Zero Potholes to improve conditions of road networks within the institution.

For over 15 years, drivers on the roads in UNICAL campus contended with numerous potholes, but the foundation, funded by the former Director General of the Department of State Service ( DSS), Mr. Ekpenyong Ita, extended its benevolence to the institution through donation of millions of naira to ensure all roads are motorable.

Chairman, Board of Trustees of the foundation, Mr. Gersh Henshaw who presented a cheque to the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Florence Obi for the repairs, said that the group was poised to contribute its quota towards the development of the institution, hence the donation.

He said the foundation, a nonprofit- making organisation, was set up for such purposes, adding that under the fund, scholarships will also be offered to indigent students in tertiary institutions to promote academic excellence across the three senatorial districts of the state.
