FCT begins re- issuance of land titles in councils

- From Anthony Otaru, Abuja

THE Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) administration has unfolded a new scheme that would enable property owners to regularise their title documents.

The proposed scheme, known as Accelerated Area Council and Sectional Titles Re- Issuance Scheme ( AACSTRIS), will prepare titleholders for the issuance of statutory Rights of Occupancy and Certificates of Occupancy ( C of O), which are bankable instruments.

FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, who made this known at the commissioning ceremony of AACSTRIS in Abuja, revealed that the project is expected to improve the revenue base of the FCT through the payment of premium, ground rents and other sundry charges.

The accrued revenue will be utilised in the provision of infrastructure within the territory.

The minister said the establishment of the AACSTRIS office, was another milestone in the quest of building a very efficient and responsive land administration.

He commended the management of the Abuja Geographic Information System ( AGIS) and Department of Land Administration for their commitment to the project.

Meanwhile, the minister has also commissioned the upgraded AGIS Geospatial Data Infrastructure, which is intended to accommodate the AACSTRIS project and extend services.

Speaking at the commissioning of the data centre, the minister admonished staff of the relevant departments to shun acts of corruption that could hinder the implementation of the new project for which the administration had committed enormous resources.

Earlier, Director of AGIS, Dr. Isa Jalo, said that the AACSTRIS office will assist in the processing pending applications for the regularisation of area council land titles from customary to statutory titles and updating of spatial as well as land information records.

The director also revealed that 302 layouts have been vetted by the Department of Urban and Regional planning, to be processed into the AGIS database, while the Department of Land Administration vetted over 700 titles.
