Lagos lawmaker urges citizens to take proactive steps on health status

THE lawmaker representing Mainland Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Moshood Oshun, has called on citizens of the state and especially those from his constituency to take cognisance of their state of health, especially their blood pressure, blood sugar, eye diseases and other common ailments that degenerate into serious health situations.

Speaking during medical outreach he organised for over 1000 residents of Yaba Local Council Development Area ( LCDA) recently, Oshun said it is important for people at the grassroots to always know their health status, saying, some of the ailments that caused untimely death could have been treated if detected early through regular health check up. Some of the heath outreach he sponsored freely for the 1000 beneficiaries include, free eye- screening test and free Human Immunodeficiency Virus ( HIV) test.

While giving out some eye glasses and drugs including cash donations to various people to undergo other critical health tests, Oshun said the initiative was part of his effort to ameliorate the sufferings of the masses and to also assist the Governor Babajide Sanwo- Olu- led administration in ensuring that citizens of Lagos are in good state of health with sound eyesight and vision.

According to him, “I realise that many people in the society have eye issues and they ignore it, either due to ignorance or lack of fund to treat themselves. Some of the issues that lead to blindness are preventable with ordinary eye drop or reading glasses.”

The programme, which was initially designed to cater for 1,000 people, attracted over 5,000 beneficiaries. He said: “What we plan for is to provide 250 people with eye glasses, 250 people with eye drops and sponsor those in need of operation. This is my personal project, which I believe in and I am investing my money in it.”
