Kano donates N20m to Katsina market fire victims

KState Government and the business community in the state have donated N20 million to victims of last month’s fire incident at the Katsina Central Market, Katsina State.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje made the donation when he and the business community visited Katsina to sympathise with victims.

The fire incident that occurred about two week’s ago affected more than 1,000 shops and wares worth billions of naira.

Governor Aminu Masari of Katsina, who visited the market shortly after the fire, shed tears and described the incident as unpreceden­ted in the annals of the state.

Announcing the donation at the Katsina Government House, Ganduje described the incident as unfortunat­e, even as he prayed against recurrence.

He said members of business community that accompanie­d him were also victims of fire incident at the Sabon Gari market in Kano, who understand what the Katsina victims were going through.

Ganduje’s words: “I’m here with my entourage, the business community who were concerned, worried and have suffered the same fire tragedy in Sabon Gari market in Kano, to console you and the people of the state over the fire that gutted the market last month.

“We pray for the recovery of losses and against future occurrence. Also, we commend Governor Masari for the quick constituti­on of fact- finding committee on the incident.”

According to him, Kano and Katsina share similariti­es in way of life and business, and that the N20 million contributi­on is to assist the victims cushion their pains.

Masari commended the Kano governor and members of the business community for the donation, even as he said that the assistance was a gesture that came from a state that had long and good ties with his state.

Meanwhile, about N200 million has so far been donated by philanthro­pists, politician­s and other members of society to the victims of the market fire. The highest donation came from All Progressiv­es Congress ( APC) national leader, Bola Tinubu, and Katsina- based business mogul, Dahiru Mangal, with each donating N50 million.

The Jigawa and Kebbi state government­s donated N20 million each, while the National Assembly members from the state made separate donations totalling about N50 million.
