S’east PDP deplores formation of Ebube Agu security outfit in Ebonyi

- From Lawrence Njoku, Enugu

PEOPLES Democratic Party ( PDP) in the South East has raised the alarm over the newly formed Ebonyi State variant of Ebube Agu security outfit, describing it is a ‘ personal militia’ created to fight personal battles and hound political opponents in the state.

After a meeting of governors and Igbo leaders in Enugu recently, Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi unveiled the state’s arm of the Ebube Agu joint regional security outfit, as agreed by the leaders in Owerri, Imo State on April 11, 2021.

He said the outfit would complement other security outfits by other states of the zone in fighting insecurity.

But in a statement in Enugu, PDP alleged that the Ebonyi Joint Security Outfit was not borne out of patriotic desire to secure life and property of Igbo people, stressing that it was setup in breach of the guidelines established by the South East governors.

In a statement issued by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Elochukwu Okeke, the party wondered why the headquarters of Ebube Agu Security Outfit was domiciled in Enugu.

“Is there any formation or establishment coordinating its organisational level? What command structure is Umahi’s

Militia aligned to? What are the rules of engagement of the Militia? Has the required legislation been passed by Ebonyi State House of Assembly and other state Houses of Assembly?

“Has Governor Umahi and governors of the other South East states signed any such bills into law? What are the terms of integration with other existing vigilante groups in South East region?” he queried.
