Anglican Church to host 15 Anambra guber aspirants, others

THE Second Session of the 12th Synod of the Anglican Communion holding between tomorrow and May 9 in Nawfia is to host no fewer than 15 aspirants for the November 6, 2021 governorship election in Anambra State.

The contestants, who cut across political parties, The Guardian gathered, are attending as part of their consultations with the relevant stakeholders in the state.

The Anglican Communion, it was further learnt, had over the years expressed reservations over the preponderance of governors of Catholic faith.

Of late, the church is believed to be making effort at seeing one of its own succeed Governor Willie Obiano at the Agu- Awka Government House come March 17, 2021.

A reliable source confirmed that a bulk of the gladiators with Anglican suasion would invade the event ground for endorsements. Besides the hopefuls, some 100 bishops, three governors, four ministers, 89 parishes and 17 archdeaconries are gracing the occasion.

The synod, which is being hosted by the Diocese of Awka at St Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church Nawfia, would touch on security, health, council administration and other major issues affecting the state.

Chairman, Central Planning Committee, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji, who dropped the hint and expressed their readiness, added that the theme of the ceremony, “Expanding Our Ministerial Coast, Implications For The Ordained and the Laity”, was carefully chosen.

He continued: “We’re also expecting the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano and the wife, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano, at the occasion being his last Synod as governor.”

According to him, delegates from 89 parishes and 17 archdeaconries would be present.

“The synod will open with the opening service and plenary session to discuss important issues in the dioceses, while the Archbishop, Most Rev. Alexander Ibezim, would deliver his presidential address on Saturday. It was gathered that on Sunday, there will be thanksgiving where the delegates would thank God for His mercies,” he clarified.

On security, Ezenwaji said the session would be remarkable, as preventive measures had been adopted for a peaceful deliberation.
