Obstacles To Smart Goal Setting

-

ACOMMON goal setting obstacle is for people to set goals for what they want for others, not what they want for themselves. If you don’t want a career, it is difficult for you to set such goal. Be sure of setting your goals for the right reasons. Write down the pros and cons of any goal and know why you want to achieve them. To succeed in goal setting, imitate successful people, who set realistic goals by working the goal into your schedule everyday. Even people who experience “overnight success” didn’t really achieve everything overnight. There were many nights of following a plan that brought the results. Goals aren’t dreams. They are realistic, specific, achievable end results that you want to see. Many people don’t set goals because they have a self- limiting belief that they’ll fail anyway. But remember he who doesn’t plan to succeed is planning to fail. Failure is certain for anyone who has no plan for his life.

Never bother about the judgment of others if want success in life. What you think of yourself is more important than anything else. When you stop judging yourself, you will stop worrying about the opinion and judgment of others. Sadly, some people are afraid of success. They cannot bear the pressure surrounding success to actually pursue goals to success. They’re more comfortable as someone who is not successful or who is “normal” instead of someone who sets goals, works toward achieving it, and is seen as a success. Indeed, there will always be people who want to tear you down once you achieve some success. However, the saddest thing in life is regretting not doing something worthwhile with your life. Most people regret things they did not do, more than the things they did do.

Then, in old age, you realize you secretly don’t think you are worth success. Goal setting is an imperative of successful achievement. Thus, smart goal setting is focusing your mind on aspects of your goals without which you cannot succeed.

One, specific: Being specific about the goal you want to achieve is very important. The subconscious part of your mind works very hard for you without your realizing it. You have to be specific what you actually want before you can achieve it.

Two, Measurable: In terms of SMART goal setting, this means you must be able to measure your goals as you move along your life path. It means you must be able to the timescales of your goal, and change the goal wherever necessary. Adjusting your goal- setting programme in order to fit into the environment is more than acceptable.

Three, Attainable: concerns how you can attain successful outcome. An unattainable goal is to say you want to earn N1million in six months in Nigeria’s currently depressed economy.

Such obnoxious goals destroy your motivation and breaks your focus. Before you know it, you’ve given up on your dreams, which will be quite sad. Thus, smart goal setting enables you to bite sizable rather than out- ofreach goals. Four, Realistic: means you must set realist goals, goals others have achieved in the past. Building a university in your lifetime, by no means a small achievement is achievable. Afe Babalola, Gabriel Igbinedion and Bola Ajibola had each single- handedly established universities in Nigeria.

Five: Timing is vital. You need timescale on your goals in order to have successful outcomes. Timing is associated with deadlines. There are goals you should achieve at specific time scales. Without a sense of time or deadline, you will not muster the discipline to do the things needed to achieve your goals.
