Mobile Film Festival Is ‘ Making Peace With Nature’

- Compiled by Shaibu Husseini

CLIMATE is at the heart of the 2021 Mobile Film Festival. In its 17th edition, the festival is partnering with the United Nations Development Programme, as well as with the support of a large network of NGOS and international organisations committed to the environment. The organisers request filmmakers to create and submit films following the unique format that has made Mobile Film Festival such a success for the last 17 years. Dubbed ‘ 1 Mobile, one minute, one Film’, this year’s theme, Making Peace with Nature, comes directly from the State of the Planet speech given by the UN Secretary- General, Antonio Guterres, at Columbia University in New York City. The festival is, thus, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGS), in particular SDG 13, which aims to urgently fight climate change and its consequences. This year, the festival will be affiliated with two major upcoming United Nations campaigns. First, the Global Week to Act for Sustainable Development Goals ( September 17- 28, 2021), for which the Mobile Film Festival will be an official event, and subsequently, COP26 in Glasgow ( from October 31 to November 12, 2021), where the official selection of 50+ winning films will be screened. The Mobile Film Festival is first and foremost a digital film festival — with a collective 134 million video views to date — so all films will be presented online and via all the festival’s social media accounts. Interestingly, all the films in the official selection will also be accessible free of charge to NGOS, associations, institutions, teachers, and anyone else who wishes to broadcast them. For this edition, call for entries is from August 24 to October 12 while the online festival is scheduled to hold as from November 2 through to 30. The award ceremony is billed for early December. One of the main objectives of the Mobile Film Festival is to discover and support the film talents of tomorrow by helping them on the road to become professional filmmakers. As with past editions, we will bestow monetary prizes to a number of winning films and filmmakers.

Also this year, the festival will award 10 prizes including $ 30,000 in creative grants.

Spotify Reveal Most Streamed Songs in Nigeria

IT has been a great time for Nigerian artists on Spotify, as the last three months shows that music lovers from all over the country chose to listen to songs by local artists during the season. With global acceptance of Nigerian music and artists growing by the day, it is not surprising that more and more Nigerians are turning to hits from their home- grown artists on Spotify for their listening pleasure. According to data from Spotify, in the last 90 days, nine local songs made the Top 10 most- streamed songs in Nigeria. Topping the list is ‘ Feeling’ by Ladipo Eso, popularly known as Ladipoe, followed by ‘ Bounce’ by Ruger and Olamide’s ‘ Rock’. Fourth on the Top 10 list is Wizkid’s ‘ Essence’ ( feat. Justin Bieber & Tems), followed by ‘ Soundgasm’ by Rema, and ‘ Understand’ by Omah Lay. “Nigerians’ support of homegrown talent has always been a joy to behold. It’s great to see that theme persevere and show up strong this summer!” says Phiona Okumu, Spotify Head of Music, SubSaharan Africa. The only non- Nigerian song in the Top 10 list is ‘ Dimension’ by JAE5, the British- born Ghanaian Grammy Award- winning pro.
