- From Murtala Adewale, Kano

THE Kano State Police command yesterday, arrested a 22- year- old Maryam Sadiq and her husband, Abubakar Sadiq for allegedly stealing a day- old baby at the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, Kano.

Parading the culprits at the Bompai Police headquarters, the police declared that the male child, delivered yesterday, along his twin brother was taken away from the hospital bed.

According to the police spokesman, DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command received the report, after which a team of intelligence officers was deployed. He said the baby was recovered successfully and culprits arrested in less than 12 hours after the incident.

“The Police on 08/ 09/ 2021, at about 0300hrs, received complaints from one Muhammad of Gayawa Quarters, Ungogo LGA Kano, that at about 0130hrs, one of his newly- born male twin babies was missing. He said his wife delivered the twins on 07/ 09/ 2021 at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital Kano and was admitted.

“According to the sister inlaw, who was looking after the babies at the maternity ward slept off. She woke up and did not see the child. Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, instructed a team of detectives, led by SP Daniel Itse Amah to rescue the victim and arrest the culprits.”

The PPRO said the detective who thereafter stormed the scene and launched a discrete search, sealed the entire hospital premises.

“Although the search in the hospital could not produce the child at that point, sustained efforts, coupled with intelligence sharing, led to the arrest of one Maryam and her husband, Abubakar, all of Rijiyar Zaki Quarters, Kano. The child was recovered from them in their home.”

The Police, however, disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that Maryam, alleged to be the prime suspect has confessed to stealing the baby at the General hospital.

According to the PPRO, part of the confession received from the prime suspect was that, she embarked on the dastardly mission to satisfy her husband, who has continually bugging her life to produce a male child for him.
