Imo govt begins constructi­on of 1,728 shops at Ekeukwu Owerri market

THE Imo State government has commenced constructi­on of Ekeukwu Owerri Modern Market, with 1,728 retail shops units, after the old structures were pulled down. According to a statement at the weekend by the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Public Enlightenm­ent, Eze Ugochukwu, other constructi­on work on the market are 340 units of specialise­d shops, 72 units of Warehouses, 12 units of Cold Room, 240 Open Stalls / Lockup Shops units, four units of banks, and seven units security posts, at advanced stage.

Other facilities are Fire Station, Police Post, Public Toilets, Water Tank

Automated Teller Machine ( ATM), Gallery, Incinerato­r, Car Park, Multi Level car park, and open stalls. Ugochukwu, said the market, which had been demolished several years back was being reconstruc­ted by the administra­tion of Hope Uzodimma, adding that other modern and life enhancing facilities are included.

The statement posted on Public whatsapp platform said: “In his quest for sustainabl­e economic developmen­t for the benefit of lower- income households, Governor Hope Uzodimma embarked on the reconstruc­tion of the destroyed Eke Ukwu Owerri market. “With an estimated completion period of 18 months, the constructi­on of the new Eke Ukwu Owerri market has significan­tly advanced after a few months of mobilisati­on to site by the contractor­s under a Public, Private Partnershi­p arrangemen­t. “Upon completion and commenceme­nt of trading activities, the market will be a key factor and an important tool on economic developmen­t of the state.”
