Imo govt begins construction of 1,728 shops at Ekeukwu Owerri market
THE Imo State government has commenced construction of Ekeukwu Owerri Modern Market, with 1,728 retail shops units, after the old structures were pulled down. According to a statement at the weekend by the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Public Enlightenment, Eze Ugochukwu, other construction work on the market are 340 units of specialised shops, 72 units of Warehouses, 12 units of Cold Room, 240 Open Stalls / Lockup Shops units, four units of banks, and seven units security posts, at advanced stage.
Other facilities are Fire Station, Police Post, Public Toilets, Water Tank
Automated Teller Machine ( ATM), Gallery, Incinerator, Car Park, Multi Level car park, and open stalls. Ugochukwu, said the market, which had been demolished several years back was being reconstructed by the administration of Hope Uzodimma, adding that other modern and life enhancing facilities are included.
The statement posted on Public whatsapp platform said: “In his quest for sustainable economic development for the benefit of lower- income households, Governor Hope Uzodimma embarked on the reconstruction of the destroyed Eke Ukwu Owerri market. “With an estimated completion period of 18 months, the construction of the new Eke Ukwu Owerri market has significantly advanced after a few months of mobilisation to site by the contractors under a Public, Private Partnership arrangement. “Upon completion and commencement of trading activities, the market will be a key factor and an important tool on economic development of the state.”
