SWAN Moves To Promote Reading Culture Among Girls
POISED to empower the girl child and amplify her voice through reading, the Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria ( SWAN) with its equipping schools library project, has donated books to Eva Adelaja Secondary School, Bariga, Lagos.
Speaking during the donation, the National Chairperson of SWAN, Nwamara Nnaji, said in the pursuit of its empowerment drive, the Association believes that a child needs good and sound educational materials as it would assist in widening her knowledge if she is focused and serious in her studies.
“A well- equipped library offers an excellent academic environment for students where they can concentrate and explore different subjects in a one- stop peaceful surrounding. SWAN believes in knowledge, research, exploring, learning, and improvement. We believe in studying wide and in- depth. Without knowledge, as a student and even as a professional, you cannot fulfill your potential.”
Nnaji, however, urged the girls to embrace the habit of good reading. “Seize the opportunity of making use of the school library as often as you can in order to research better without having to worry about buying the books yourself.”
He said, “Our profession as accountants is wide and all embracing. We encourage you to delve into the accounting background. You can only achieve this if you read wide and aim high. It makes one a better citizen, empowers you mentally, socially, academically and financially.”
While Chairperson, of the project, Ronke Akeredolu, noted that the association is determined to give the best that would further benefit the girl child who are leaders of tomorrow.
In appreciation, Principal of the school,
Mrs. Soyoye Oluyinka, applauded the Association for deeming it fit to impact the students.
“We want more of this to impact the students and make them know beforehand, the right choice as well as benefits of being an accountant. We have seen that there are many opportunities in this field, they can be auditors in firms, Bursars too and this would encourage them to be more focused. If other women can make it and having had the opportunity to witness such programme, it will serve as a motivation to them.”
SWAN, is an association of female members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria ( ICAN).
