• World Refugee Day • 2018 - Nigeria

Pres. Muhammadu Buhari signed the budget into law six months after it was presented to the lawmakers and a month after the lawmakers passed the budget. Buhari had accused the National Assembly of manipulati­ng the budget by cutting essential projects and inserting non- essential ones. Reacting, the lawmakers said they had no option than to tinker with the budget estimates as sent by the executive.

Uber founder Travis Kalanick resigned as CEO amid a widespread sexual harassment scandal at the Wall Street- backed ride- hailing company. 20 Uber workers were also fired over the reports of sexual harassment

• 2017 - Nigeria

Despite attempts by Nigerian Communicat­ions Commission and Central Bank of Nigeria to save the fourth largest telecoms firm, the consortium of 13 banks, led by Access Bank took over Etisalat Nigeria, ending months of speculatio­ns about the firm’s future after it failed to reach agreement with the banks for restructur­ing of its N541.8 billion debt.

• Federal Government suspended tenure policy in federal civil service, which prescribes 60 years or 35 years of service for mandatory retirement.

• 2011 - Tunisia

Autocratic ruler, whose ouster triggered a series of Arab world uprisings went on trial in absentia in first of a long court proceeding­s five months after he went into exile. Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and wife Leila Trabelsi were convicted in absentia on embezzleme­nt after $ 27 million in jewels and public funds were found in his palace.

Alexander Graham Bell installed the world's first commercial telephone service in Ontario, Canada.
