2023 census: NPC urges cooperatio­n during trial exercise in Anambra

A Spreparati­ons reach advanced stage, the National Population Commission ( NPC) in Anambra State has canvassed for support and cooperatio­n from people for the conduct of trial census in the state ahead of the 2023 population and housing census.

The Commission­er representi­ng Anambra at the NPC, Mr. Chidi Ezeoke, made the appeal, yesterday, in Awka, after he led other principal officials of the commission in the state to an advocacy tour/ stakeholde­rs meeting to AwkaEtiti and Nnobi respective­ly.

Ezeoke disclosed that a total of 1,249 trained personnel, including supervisor­s and enumerator­s, were expected to go round the designated communitie­s in Idemili South Local Council, numbering houses and enumeratin­g members of households in the selected areas.

He described the trial census as dress rehearsal, saying it would help evaluate all aspects of the census operation before the main census.

According to him, the exercise will be conducted in all enumeratio­n areas in one local council and in one state in each of the six ge opolitical zones in the country.

In his speech, the State Director, NPC, Joachim Ulasi, disclosed that their visit to Idemili South was to seek assurances of cooperatio­n and security from the seven communitie­s of the council before the exercise.

Ulasi maintained that the adv ocacy visit was important because y ou cannot enter the communitie­s without informing them you are coming.

“The essence is to gain the people’s support by way of security of life and materials, sensitise the people that we are around and in town to carry out our exercise.

“What we have done today is to inform them, in advance, that we are coming to do trial census in the communitie­s that make up Idemili South and the exercise is to test our equipment to be deployed in the conduct of proper census next year,” he noted.

Stakeholde­rs in Awka- Etiti and Nnobi communitie­s, in their separate speeches, assured of their readiness to participat­e in the trial census, and promised warm reception to the NPC personnel during the exercise.
