Panic grips Osun residents as unknown gunmen in military uniform attack community

RESIDENTS of the ancient Ibala- Ijesa community in Obokun Local Council of Osun State were, yesterday, thrown into fear after gunmen attacked a house and vandalised the premises.

The gunmen were said to have adorned military uniform and other accoutreme­nts in the operation, which occurred early Wednesday.

The destroyed properties, which included; a Mazda Multi- Purpose Vehicle ( MPV) and Toyota Corolla car, belonging to the immediate past Chairman of Pharmaceut­ical Society of Nigeria ( PSN) in Osun State, Mr. Kayode Adetona.

It was gathered that the gunmen, numbering about eight, stormed the house and started vandalisin­g the building and vehicles parked within its premises.

They were said to have left the building when they discovered that the occupant wasn’t their target.

Narrating his ordeal, the victim, Mr. Adetona, said the armed men, who adorned army’s camouflage fatigue were eight in number.

He said they came in a white Hilux van and that their operation lasted more than an hour.

Adetona added that the armed men, who broke into his apartment in a commando- like manner, left when their leader told them he was not the target.

Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, who confirmed the incident, said the state Criminal Investigat­ion and Intelligen­ce

Department ( SCIID) had commenced investigat­ion into the circumstan­ces surroundin­g the attack.

Also confirming the attack, the Field Commandant of Southwest Security Network codenamed Operation Amotekun, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, suspected the attackers to be cultists in the area.

Shittu said: “I heard that the attack was carried out by cultists. It may be worse in the next two weeks than what we are seeing now and that’s why the generality of the people must support Amotekun.”

Meanwhile, residents of the community have been overwhelme­d by fear since the attack.

Some of them, who spoke to The Guardian, urged the state government and security agencies to brace up before worse attacks happen in the area.
