Surveyors seek role in construction project monitoring

- By Bertram Nwannekanma

ALECTURER at the Department of Surveying and Geo- informatics, Federal University, Oye - Ekiti, Dr. Joseph Olayemi Odumosu, has called for engagement of surveyors to monitor projects.

Odumosu spoke at a twoday Mandatory Continuous Professional Development ( MCPD), training organised by Lagos State branch of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors ( NIS) themed: “AsBuilt Building Information Modeling based on Structural Health Model”, in Lagos.

Lamenting that surveyors are not optimally engaged at the moment, Odumosu said if surveyors are engaged, construction and building failures witnessed in the country will be a thing of the past.

He also called on government and its agencies to carry everyone along, since government is for all.

He said: “We see jobs being given to contractors to execute, and the contractors do not engage surveyors for monitoring these contracts.

“When contracts are awarded to contractors, let there be surveyors monitor

ing them. It shouldn't be part of the builders’ job.”

On whether clients have knowledge of the surveyors roles, in this regard, Odumosu said surveyors are engaging and undertaking enlightenment programmes to ensure that more people are aware of NIS activities.

Speaking, the Vice Chairman of the branch and chairman of Editorial

Committee, Adedeji Otimo, said the training was to update the knowledge of members to address the issue of construction failure with the use of new technologies.

He said: “We have deployed a scanner in this MCPD. The laser scanner is used for monitoring of buildings, structures, highrise buildings, bridges and any other structure at all.
