Donald Trump in his first foreign trip as president met with Pope Francis at the Vatican. Photo showed an apparently cheery Trump standing beside glum- looking pope. The White House report read: “The Pope did not say anything. He did not smile.” Pope Francis was critical of Trump, once saying, “a person who thinks only about building walls, not bridges, is not a Christian.”

• 1999 - Kosovo
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, Netherlands indicted Slobodan Milošević and four others for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo.
• 1993 - Eritrea
Eritrea achieved independence from Ethiopia after a 30- year civil war. Some 65,000 Eritreans lost their lives in the fight for independence. Pres. Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia allowed Eritrea to secede as reward for the support of its rebel forces in 1991.
• 1992 - Thailand
The last Thai dictator, General Suchinda Kraprayoon, resigned following prodemocracy protests.
