FRSC advocates sustainable transport system
FEDERAL Road Safety Corps ( FRSC) has advocated a sustainable transport system that would provide safe, accessible and environmentally friendly transport in the country.
Delta State Sector Commander, of the FRSC, Eshiet Udeme, disclosed this while speaking with The Guardian in his office in
Asaba, the State capital.
Udeme said because of the frightening data of road crashes, and others, occasioned by fuel vehicles, there is an urgent need for Nigeria to move away from a system that would always damage the public via dangerous emissions of burning of fuel in vehicles.
He said: "We are looking at trains, ships and other electric mobilities which the
United Nations want to introduce to the people, even though we ha ve been able to surmount the trend of road crashes.”
The Sector Command revealed that stakeholders in the transport sector ha ve been educated on the need to move toward the direction of a sustainable transport system, which was the theme of this year' s United Nations campaign.
He, therefore, urged policymakers to think outside the box, and adhere strictly to the United Nations directive that all nations, including Nigeria, should shift to sustainable transport mobility, noting that it will go a long way not to inhale dangerous gas into the body system.
"The need for safety consciousness to make a shift from transport system that will endanger lives to what will make human lives sustained is to re- introduce cycling electronic motor, ship and train that will make people safe by reducing the number of vehicles on our roads to reduce road crashes on our roads.
"We may not be fully prepared in this particular campaign but we can start from somewhere in saving people's lives. If you go into cycling you build our health, hence we encourage people to use ship and train to sustain the lives of the people because they will not be inhaling dangerous gas into their body system,” he stated.
Udeme tasked all vehicle owners to install the speed limit devices, and maintain their vehicles, particula rly the smoking ones, so as not to endanger the lives of others.
