NIMASA targets improved revenue from South- eastern zone

THENigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency ( NIMASA), has charged its officers in the South- eastern zone to generate more revenue into the coffers of the Federal Government.

The Director General of NIMASA, Bashir Jamoh, said it was necessary for the team in the region to redouble their efforts towards increased revenue because the issue of oil lifting is more in the eastern zone than in the West, adding that the agency was determined to support the government treasury.

He said, “There will no longer be any excuse for non- performance of the zone. I will like to see revenue for the Eastern zone redouble because the issue of oil lifting in the eastern zone is much higher than the West. I will like to see the revenue of this Agency improve tremendously”.

Jamoh stated this in Port Harcourt during the inauguration of NIMASA building sited at the University of Port Harcourt.

The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo who performed the inauguration on behalf of the Federal government, said the purpose of the edifice is for the enhancement of maritime education in Rivers State and its environs. Sambo, who was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Magdalene Ajani, advised staff to improve their efforts in enforcing and monitoring shipping activities across the Eastern zone of the country.

According to the minister, the new office named after Magaret Onyema- Orakwusi, “is a property that has been purchased by NIMASA following the federal executive council approval. Behind this main building is the search and rescue clinic. It is for injured or ill seafarers in this region who are evacuated from the vessels and brought in for treatment and it will serve as a clinic for the staff in the eastern zone.

“Also, in the university of Port Harcourt, the Agency had commissioned a building it donated for the purpose of being used as a maritime institute in the university”, he said.

He added that the project is one of the corporate social responsibilities that the NIMASA, under the Ministry of transportation, undertook to improve and encourage knowledge in the maritime industry, particularly with reference to safety and security and research in the marine industry.
