Court remands teenager, father for death of Islamic scholar in Kano

AMagistrat­e's Court in Kano, yesterday, remanded one Yusuf Haruna in a Correction­al Centre for allegedly stabbing an Islamic scholar, Malam Sani Mohammed to death.

The defendant, Haruna, 18 and resident of Tudun Nufawa Quarters Kano, was arraigned by the police for culpable homicide. He was arrested after the case was reported by one Musa Yunusa, of the same address at Jakara Police Division Kano on December 3, 2023. Haruna was alleged to have attacked and stabbed the 45year- old Imam, with a sharp knife in his back at about 7: 00p. m.

As a result of the attack, the victim sustained deep injury and was rushed to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

While appearing before the Court yesterday, the defendant denied committing the offence, which contravene­d the provisions of Section 221 of the Penal Code.

Ruling on the matter, Chief

Magistrate Binta Galadanchi, ordered that the defendant be remanded in a Correction­al Centre and adjourned the matter to January 31, for further mention. ALSO, Yusuf’s father, Haruna Sani, was arraigned before the Court for hiding his son over the alleged murder. Sani, who lives at Tudun Nufawa Quarters Kano, was arraigned on a count charge of shielding an offender, contrary to section 167 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutin­g counsel, Ado- Ahmad, alleged that on December 31, the defendant hid his son “Yusuf” after stabbing Mohammed to death .. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge. During the proceeding, the prosecutor opposed the bail applicatio­n made by the defence counsel.

Responding, the defence counsel, Ahmad Rufa’i holding brief for Mr Rabiu Sidi, urged the court to grant the defendant bail pursuant to section 35, 36, of the 1999 Nigeria Constituti­on as amended and section 168 of ACJL 2019 Kano State.
