Aiyedatiwa says Akure too dirty, reviews Ondo’s waste policies

GOVERNOR of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has ordered the immediate review of waste management policies and operations in the state, particular­ly Akure, the capital, which he says is too dirty.

The governor gave the directive, yesterday, during a meeting with the Commission­er for En vironment, Sunday Akinwalire, at the Governor' s Office, Alagbaka.

Aiyedatiwa expressed dissatisfa­ction with the state of cleanlines­s in the state capital, saying that Akure must be returned to its old status as one of the cleanest state capitals in Nigeria.

The governor emphasised his administra­tion's commitment towards making all the nooks and crannies of the state clean, with particular attention to the state capital. Following the governor' s directive, Akinwalire immediatel­y embarked on inspection and monitoring exercises to strategic areas and various dumpsites within the state capital.

Speaking during the inspection, the commission­er, who said Aiyedatiwa was concerned about the healthy liv - ing of the citizens, urged the people to live in a healthy environmen­t to a void contractin­g air- borne and waterborne diseases. Akinwalire i mplored the public to make their environmen­t clean and live a healthy lifestyle, as the government would do everything possible to make the en vironment more people- friendly.

The commission­er warned those trading on the walkways and those dumping refuse on major roads to desist from such acts and obey en vironmenta­l la ws, noting that the government has establishe­d a court for defaulters.
