- From Lawrence Njoku, Enugu

Aprofessor of Ethics and Intellectual Studies, Prof. Obiora Ike, has been appointed into the board of newly established Peaceland University, Enugu.

The institution ‘ s ProChancellor, Prof. Felix Ugwuozor, who presented the letter to Ike, said the appointment was for an initial four years.

The letter read in part: “It has pleased the board of trustees, to convey its decision to appoint you as a board member of the newly established institution. By your appointment, you are required to attend all the meetings and offer useful and meaningful contributions for the development of the university.”

An elated Ike described his appointment as an honour to promote education in the country and in Enugu State. He noted that education is an essential element for any country that aspires to grow and should be valued in every human settlement.

“It is where minds, generations, teachings happen; where productivity and scientific development can take place. So, when you compare that to our Peaceland University, it is a whole lot of work,” he stated

Ike added that universities must remain consistent and focused to compete globally, lamenting that the 230 licensed universities have not been able to cater for the educational needs of the country.

“We have a country of 240 million people, but all those in the universities are around two million, what does that mean? I could say one per cent of Nigerians are in higher institutions and 99 percent are not. It means we have tremendous work to do and that is at multi- disciplinary levels,” he added,

Ike, a scholar, writer and teacher is the founding Director of the Catholic Institute of Development, Justice and Peace ( CIDJAP), Enugu.
