When the unexpected happens the insured are worried
SIR: Just imagine that you were there on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 when the sound of the explosion went off in Ibadan. For some of us, it’s like the news of the kidnap of a close family member or friend.
Yet for some others, it would be like the news of the coup in ‘ Bigman Wahala’ or the exit of one’s cherished team from a tournament.
These devastating occurrences are real life- changing events depending on where you stand and how you are connected to these circumstances.
Living and livelihoods just come to a halt until something kicks in, and I am not talking about the messages of consolation and hope, but actions that demonstrate real human care and love.
Everything in life goes through a process, like we say, but how do you explain that process to people who have lost loved ones, those whose homes have been melted or those whose sources of income or joy have been taken away?
This is why even the insured among us get worried when accidents and incidents occur. They’re worried about the process and procedures. If insurance companies begin to rely more on the allowance provided by the terms of certain policies, to make deposits for claims of this nature, the pains of victims will be lessened, and the appreciation of insurance heightened.
Someone will be thinking, “If the insured are worried, what will then happen to the uninsured victims?” This is just a natural question that time takes care of. Ultimately, all the parties involved with the insured ( agents, brokers, insurers, loss adjusters and regulators) will work towards ensuring compensation in line with the terms and conditions of the policies or contracts.
The uninsured have always been saved by family and friends, and sometimes, the government after all the bureaucratic processes have been fulfilled.
Whichever way, insurance will work better while family and friends can be the “next level insurance” since, culturally, you can’t stop us from supporting one another.
Does insurance work? Yes! However, we need to make it work for us by ensuring we have it whenever the need arises.
