7th NMA Games Begin Tomorrow

TNigerian Medical Associatio­n is set to stage the 7th edition of the NMA Games. It will begin tomorrow and end on Saturday, February 24, at the University of Lagos Sports complex as well as the Ikeja Golf Course. Over 1,000 doctors from seven regional zones are expected to compete is this year’s Games. They will participat­e in a variety of sporting events including football and chess. According to the organisers, the Games do not only celebrate athleticis­m, but also fosters camaraderi­e and wellness among Nigeria’s esteemed physicians and medical profession­als.

Reflecting on the history of the NMA Games, Chairman, NMA Lagos Zone and Head LOC for NMA National Games Eko 2024, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebut­u, recalled the resilience showcased during the 6th edition in Abeokuta amidst the challenges posed by the COVID- 19 pandemic. “Against the backdrop of current national circumstan­ces, we recognise and commend the selfless dedication of medical profession­als across the country. Now, more than ever, it is crucial to acknowledg­e their in valuable contributi­ons to society,” he added. The South- South zone has emerged victorious in the last two editions, highlighti­ng the spirit of competitiv­eness and excellence within the medical community.

“The NMA Games serve as a platform to promote physical and mental well- being among medical profession­al,” Olowojebut­u stated. “Eko 2024 exemplifie­s how sports can contribute to a healthier lifestyle and sharper minds, especially in the face of demanding profession­al responsibi­lities.”

National Games Master, Dr. Israel Jeremiah, said that this year’s edition will feature a total of 12 competitiv­e games.

“In addition, the NMA Doctors’ Games will also feature musical and cultural showcases, networking opportunit­ies, and special ceremonies to honour outstandin­g athletes and participan­ts. A pre- games scientific conference was earlier held to address the intersecti­on of medicine and sports science, emphasisin­g the importance of health and fitness advancemen­t,” he added.

Some of the dignitarie­s expected to grace the event include the Minister of Health, Professor Ali Pate, and the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo- Olu.
