N’assembly members willing to slash salaries over hardship, says Kalu

Abbas tasks Nigerians on patience, preaches hope

- From Adamu Abuh and Sodiq Omolaoye, Abuja

DEPUTY Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu has hinted that members of parliament are willing to adjust their salaries as sacrifice and in solidarity with Nigerians over the prevailing hardship in the country.

He recalled that the lawmaker made a similar sacrifice in 2020 to cushion the hardship imposed on the people by the COVID- 19 pandemic.

Kalu, who spoke yesterday on a live programme stressed that though their salaries and allowances could barely serve them and promote projects in their various constituencies, they were, however, willing as always to prioritise the nation and constituents.

He stated that the National Assembly leadership remained selfless and ready to make necessary sacrifices for the good of the country.

MEANWHILE, House Speaker, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, has pleaded with Nigerians to be patient, promising them better days ahead. He made the appeal yesterday when he received the leadership of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria ( PASAN) led by the National President, Muhammad Usman, in Abuja.

He said government needed time to implement initiatives and programmes geared at improving the standard of living of the citizenry.

Abbas charged his visitors to be a bridge of conciliation between the National Assembly leadership and organised labour, by conveying his message of hope and assurances on behalf of the President to the workers, adding that a positive change is closer to them than ever .

Usman had earlier informed the Speaker that the delegation was in his office to assure him and the National Assembly leadership of their support and cooperation in appreciation of the positive changes that have occurred since he assumed office as the nation’s number four citizen.
