NIMC targets 25m additional NIN registrations by year end

- By Adeyemi Adepetun

THE National Identity Management Commission ( NIMC) has revealed plans to enroll between 20 million and 25 million NINS by the end of 2024 through its five- point agenda.

The Director of Business Development and Commercial Services, NIMC, Carolyn Folami, who stated this at the weekend, during an interaction of the Commission ( NIMC) with Front End Partners ( FEPS), said all hands are on deck to ensure that this is achieved, even before the end of the year.

As of December 2023, NIMC had issued 104 million NINS to Nigerians, including those in the diaspora.

While tasking the FEPS to be more active, Folami informed that the Commission is bringing up a new mechanism. “Previously, there wasn’t an automated system for payment. But now, the License Assurance Framework ( LAF) represents a mechanism that would allow NIMC to be able to pay FEPS, exactly what they earn.

“We have engaged a couple of them, and we have revalidated about 96 of them lately, to put onto the new system that we have built which is trying to ensure the integrity of the data that we are bringing. We have had a series of issues concerning data integrity, in terms of some FEPS doing some unwholesome activities. So we have to bring in LAF, to ensure that all ends are tighten- up and we can have one view of FEPS onboarding from the beginning to when they are paid,” she stated.

Speaking on the ID4D programme, Folami said the target handed NIMC was to achieve 180 million NINS registration.

“Right now, we all know that the Nigerian population is above 180 million and our mandate is to ensure that every single Nigerian gets a NIN. We want to ensure that we cover as much as we can within the limit of the funding given to us. The ID4D programme is for five years. We have only spent three years, and since we have already achieved 114 million out of the over 200 million Nigerians, we are halfway there and I believe we will achieve the target,” Folami stated.

On her part, the Director- General, NIMC, Abisoye Coker- Odusote, urged the FEPS to work with NIMC to guarantee the success of the entire process.

“This session connects to one of the first agenda points, which speaks to an increase in enrolment nationwide and the FEPS are very crucial and they play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our enrolment plan nationwide,” she stated.

Elaborating more on FEPS payment and the drive to deepen NIN registration, the NIMC boss, said: “We have started to review the process of payment for them and one of the things that we have factored in, was for us to check in the back end to validate and verify that the total number of NINS, they claimed that they have generated is what we are going to pay them, which is the normal process. A lot of them expect us not to carry out due diligence, but we have ensured that we must carry out our due diligence, as a responsible Federal Government agency, so it has to be done.”
