FCCPC commits to customer rights, competitive markets

- By Florence Utor

THEFederal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission ( FCCPC) has assured consumers that it will not relent in its efforts to develop and promote fair, efficient and competitive markets in the Nigerian economy, facilitate access by all citizens to safe products and secure the protection of rights for all consumers in Nigeria.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer, FCCPC, Dr Adamu Abdullahi, gave this assurance at the end of a fourday electricity consumer complaints resolution platform, an interactive session for addressing the billing, metering, transformer and other electricity consumer issues in IKEDC coverage areas.

Aided by Macathur Foundation, the forum has held all over the country, with Bauchi as the last point of call.

Abdullahi said majority of complaints the organisation received were from this sector and Macarthur Foundation suggested to them to go all over the country, listen to them and intervene.

Abdullahi said, “since then, it has been a road show for us going all over the country. We received so many complaints. That is why we always insist that the sector regulatory body, Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission ( NERC), has to be here with us.

Abdullahi continued, “the complaints all over the country are the same. From over billing, transformer problems, disregard from NERC regarding disconnection, tariff ban, account reconciliation, adjustment bottle necks, disconnection without notice, billing before connection of new properties to electricity, among others.

Abdullahi said that is why the corporation has decided that complainants sit down with the people who will resolve their problems. Many issues were resolved in the four days and complainants were encouraged to feel free to report to any of the FCCPC offices in Lagos as there will always be people there to receive their complains and channel them to where they will find solutions.

Abdullahi emphasised that “We give you assurances that we are here for you so feel free to use our services, we are always on ground 24 hours to solve your problems. When you want to see us, just go online to our website and lodge your complain or call our phone numbers and whoever is not doing the right thing will be made to do it right.”

He enjoined stakeholders to do justice to all the complaints even after they left.

Area Inspecting Engineer, Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency ( NEMSA), Salami Oladokun, assured FCCPC on behalf of the management that they would continue to collaborate with them knowing that they are also delivering part of their mandate as a technical agency.
