Good Kidney Health Is Vital To Your Survival- CMD UITH Admonishes

CONSTANTLY check your blood pressure and monitor your Blood Sugar level at the right time to reduce cases of Kidney diseases in Nigeria," the Chief Medical Director ( CMD), University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital,( UITH) Professor A. D. Yussuf admonished Nigerians during the last World Kidney Day ( WKD) held at the UITH.

The CMD who was represente­d by the Acting Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee ( C- MAC) of the hospital, Professor S. A. Biliaminu, described the theme for this year WKD, ' Kidney Health for All' as apt, urging Nigerians to abstain from some organic products and indiscrimi­nate use of drugs to avoid kidney diseases.

In his comment at the event, the registrar of the schools of the UITH, Mr E. Y. Oyinloye, who represente­d the Director of Administra­tion of the hospital, Mr A. F. Agbana, canvassed special attentions by the participan­ts to their kidney health care. He thanked the Management for making the event a reality at the hospital.

The Chairman Local Organising Committee ( LOC) of the WKD, Dr Oyedepo, said the day is marked on every second Thursday in the month of March. The LOC Chairman added that kidneys as major organ of the body, help in the removal of excess fluid from the body, control blood pressure and remove waste and toxins from the body.

The Acting Head of Department, Renal Unit of the UITH, Professor Timothy Olanrewaju urged Nigerians to urgently visit hospitals when they notice some of the following symptoms:

* when there is fatigue and having trouble concentrat­ing

* trouble in sleeping

* dry and itchy skin

* swollen ankles and feet and

* notice of blood in the urine

Oyedepo added that the celebratio­n started in the 2006 leading to the creation of awareness on kidney diseases and the need for regular screening of the people. He warned that when the disease had regenerate­d to the level of using dialysis for therapeuti­c purposes, it would be too exorbitant to afford and could lead to avoidable deaths of the concerned patients.
