TGerman Consul General to Nigeria, His Excellency, Mr. Weertborner has underscored the critical importance of addressing food security, education, and housing, while also highlighting the pressing issue of climate change, which demands global attention and concerted efforts. Borner, who disclosed this during his visit to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta ( FUNAAB), Ogun State, in company of his wife, Dr. Imkefor possible collaborations to bolster agricultural innovation at FUNAAB, advocated for a global alliance for food security.

While delivering a lecture titled: "Nigeria- German Cooperation: Improving Food Security Through Sustainable Agriculture,” Bornerstressed the need for urgent action, pointing out that while the German government and the United Nations have provided aid in food supplies, it is imperative to seek sustainable solutions for long- term development and prosperity. He particularly stressed the significance of enhancing fertiliser production with renewable energy sources, foreseeing substantial advancements in agricultural output through innovative approaches. Highlighting the priority placed by the German government on NigerianGerman cooperation in food security, Borner referenced high- level visits to Nigerian authorities, including the President and Commander in Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to foster agricultural collaborations. According to him, the aim was to further discuss agricultural- related issues and to ensure there was economic stability in Nigeria.

He noted that there were three major areas the discussion focused on which were to improve agricultural technology, be innovative and make agriculture a business, and foster rural development by improving the energy infrastructure.

Borner, a high- ranking German Diplomat observed the many inherent benefits from cassava, ranging from the skins and the outer layers, which could be used for many purposes, adding that a possible area of partnership was how to improve the productivity on cassava. Besides, he also noted the ongoing partnerships aimed at establishing Trade Fairs focused on agro- food, slated to commence on March 26.

While commending the inviting ambience of FUNAAB, Borner likened the University to a flourishing garden.

He however, decried the dilapidated state of the road from Camp to the University gate, adding that the intracampus road and aesthetics were soothing relief.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, expressed gratitude to Borner and his wife for their visit, saying it symbolised the enduring partnership between Germany and FUNAAB.

He emphasised the University's commitment to fostering collaboration through initiatives such as faculty exchanges, joint research endeavours, and the integration of contemporary agricultural technologies into the curriculum.

In her vote of thanks, the Acting Registrar, Mrs. Oluwatoyinmorufatdawodu appreciated the German Consul General for the enriching lecture, adding that the University is hopeful it would be the start of good things between FUNAAB and the German government.
