ESVARBON pledges to enhance valuers’ role in economy

- By Victor Gbonegun

THE new Chairman, Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria ( ESVARBON), Dosu Fatokun has pledged to deepen the role of practitioners in property and facility management, especially in valuation practice.

He expressed readiness of the board to implement its constitutional mandate effectively and ensure the profession occupies its rightful place in national economic development.

Fatokun, a past president of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers ( NIESV) gave the assurance during his acceptance speech as the 16th Chairman of the board. He said more focus will be on ensuring that ESVARBON effectively occupies its legal space given to the institution by Decree 24 of 1975, CAP 111 law of Nigeria, the law that confers ESVARBON to regulate activities of practicing estate surveyors and valuers.

According to him, the board will strengthen the role of supervising and nurturing several academic/ professional disciplines. “A foundation has been laid and there are priorities. We should be able to relate with other similar institutions abroad either in the United Kingdom or United States. In Nigeria’s economy today, if there is anything that gives one joy, it is the Nigerian Stock Exchange, which has been performing well for the past four years.

“In fact, over 100 per cent increase in some stocks, the capitalisation, which is the total investment in the exchange and this represents land and buildings, plants and machinery that are invested in this economy. If you look at the real estate sector, we have a lot to do, we value and manage property,” he said.

On activities of quacks, he said the board will do everything within its powers to limit their incursion into the profession and unify members for growth and development.

The outgoing chairman, Gersh Henshaw, lauded members and board for the cooperation and support during his tenure and appealed to them to extend the same to his successor.

He said the board by dint of hard work made remarkable contributions toward the fulfillment of its statutory mandates in the past three years and assured members that the new administration will do better.
