Everton gets another two- point deduction, sinks into relegation

-

EVERTON have been thrust deep into relegation by an additional twopoint deduction by an independent Premier League Commission in relation to a second charge over breaking Profit & Sustainability Rules ( PSR). The club released an official statement following the news, which is the second point deduction the Merseyside club has faced this season.

In January 2024, Everton were charged by the Premier League for breaching the permitted PSR thresholds for the assessment period ending 2022/ 23, with the matter referred to a Premier League Commission, which has issued points deduction.

Everton’s statement read: “While the club’s position has been that no further sanction was appropriate, the club is pleased to see that the Commission has given credit to the majority of the issues raised by the club.”

These issues listed by the club included “the concept of double punishment, the significant mitigating circumstances facing the club due to the war in Ukraine, and the high level of co- operation and early admission of the club’s breach.”

The Premier League club were penalised earlier this season for overspending during the 2021/ 22 season and were charged with a 10- point deduction that was subsequently reduced to six, following a successful appeal.

It seems that the club is poised to appeal this recent penalty as well.

The statement continued: “Everton remains committed to working collaboratively with the League on all matters relating to PSR but is extremely concerned by the inconsistency of different commissions in respect of points deductions applied.

“The club and its legal representatives have begun the preparations to appeal the Commission’s decision.” Although the deduction doesn’t put Everton in direct danger of relegation it does put them back in contention. Currently, the team sits in 15th position, four points off the drop.
