Group’s ‘ Eye can see’ initiative provides hope and healing

- By Damilola Bankole Bankole wrote from Benin City, Edo State.

VISUAL impairment poses a significant challenge for countless individuals, compromising their confidence, independence, and overall quality of life. The statistics are concerning, indicating that millions of Nigerians, across all age groups, suffer from debilitating eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. With an aging population, these numbers are projected to rise further.

Diminished or complete loss of sight can severely undermine one’s independence, confidence, and overall well- being leading to increased stress, anxiety, and feelings of diminished self- worth.

Simple daily activities that were once routine can become sources of frustration and struggle. Dependence on others for tasks and mobility can lead to feelings of helplessness and can even precipitate conditions like depression, social withdrawal, and emotional distress. Vision loss may strain personal relationships as individuals cope with new limitations and feelings of burden on loved ones. Social isolation becomes a risk factor as impaired individuals may avoid activities, appointments, and interactions they once enjoyed. This isolation can breed loneliness and exacerbate psychological decline.

Managing visual impairment involves early detection, proper diagnosis, and access to quality eye care services. Efforts aimed at improving access to eye care services for visually impaired individuals can significantly impact their lives positively.

Over the past 12 years, the NEPL/ Seplat Energy Joint Venture has championed the “Eye Can See” initiative, a commendable effort that has significantly impacted the lives of thousands of individuals living in communities where the Joint Venture operates by restoring eyesight and enhancing their overall quality of life. This initiative, which comes at no cost to the beneficiaries, has seen remarkable success with over 96,000 eye treatments administered, including over 4,000 eye surgeries, and the distribution of more than 45,000 prescription glasses.

The ongoing 2024 edition of the initiative, which kicked- off at the Oba of Benin Palace in Benin City, Edo State, is set to mark another milestone in its ongoing mission. This year’s edition aims to screen 6,000 individuals, conduct 350 surgeries, and distribute 5,000 reading glasses across some communities in Edo and Delta states. This ambitious undertaking underscores the ongoing commitment of the NEPL/ Seplat Energy Joint Venture to reach more people and make a tangible difference in their lives.

The impact of the initiative extends far beyond mere numbers; it represents a deep commitment to community welfare and healthcare accessibility. Seplat Energy and NEPL have proved their commitment to enhancing people’s wellbeing by addressing vision impairments and providing necessary eye care services.

The direct beneficiaries of the initiative are profoundly grateful for the hope and transformation it has brought to them. Many participants who attended the event on the first day had struggled with vision impairments caused by various factors. However, thanks to the swift and comprehensive services provided by the initiative, they were promptly attended to, underwent necessary tests, those who needed surgeries were scheduled for surgeries, those who needed prescription glasses were attended to and those who underwent surgery experienced remarkable recoveries, regaining total control of their vision. The success stories emerging from the initiative serve as remarkable testimonials to its impact on individuals, families, and communities. Beyond restoring vision, this initiative touches the very essence of human dignity, independence, and opportunities.

By addressing untreated eye conditions, this initiative not only improves physical sight but also restores a sense of self- worth, freedom, and the ability to pursue a better quality of life.

The holistic approach of the initiative, which includes screenings, surgeries, and the provision of eyewear, reflects a deep understanding of the multifaceted needs of the beneficiaries. It not only addresses immediate healthcare concerns but also fosters long- term well- being and empowerment.

One of the most profound effects of the programme is the restoration of dignity among its beneficiaries. Vision impairment can have a significant impact on a person’s sense of dignity, as it often limits their ability to perform daily tasks independently. Simple tasks such as reading, writing, or navigating the environment become difficult, leading to frustration and a loss of selfesteem. Through the “Eye Can See” initiative, individuals regain their ability to see clearly, reclaiming their dignity and restoring their confidence to engage fully in activities they love.

Independence is another critical aspect that the initiative achieves. For many beneficiaries, untreated eye conditions can result in reliance on others for basic tasks and activities. This reliance can affect their sense of independence and autonomy, impacting their overall well- being. By providing comprehensive eye care services, including surgeries and eyewear, the initiative empowers individuals to regain their independence and live life on their terms, without being hindered by vision- related challenges.

The initiative opens up new opportunities for its beneficiaries. Clear vision is essential for education, employment, and economic participation. Children with improved vision can excel in school, pursue higher education, and ultimately contribute positively to their communities.

Adults who regain their sight can rejoin the workforce, pursue entrepreneurial ventures, or engage in activities that were previously inaccessible to them. This enables individuals and families to break free from the limitations imposed by untreated eye conditions.

Beyond the individual level, the initiative’s impact extends to families and communities. One significant aspect is the ease it allows for emotional and financial burdens that families face when caring for visually impaired relatives.

Vision impairment can impose significant challenges on family members who often take on the role of caregivers. This responsibility not only requires time and effort but also emotional resilience as they navigate the complexities of supporting a visually impaired loved one. The initiative relieves families of this burden by restoring vision to affected members, thereby reducing stress, anxiety, and emotional strain within the household.

The restored vision of a family member has a ripple effect that uplifts the entire household. Improved communication becomes possible as family members can interact more effectively, enhancing familial bonds and relationships. Simple activities such as sharing stories, watching television together, or having conversations become more engaging and fosters a positive and cohesive family environment, promoting overall well- being and mental health. Productivity within the household also sees a boost with the restoration of vision. Visually impaired individuals may struggle to contribute to household chores, educational activities, or income- generating work. By regaining their sight, they can actively participate in these tasks, contributing to increased productivity in the household. This, in turn, reduces the workload on other family members and creates a more balanced family dynamic.

The positive changes within individual households also extend to the wider community. Families that no longer face the challenges of caring for visually impaired relatives can redirect their resources, time, and energy towards community engagement, social activities, or other productive endeavors. This active participation strengthens social relationships and encourages community engagement.

Vision impairment presents significant economic ramifications for affected individuals, imposing substantial financial burdens and potential loss of income. Those experiencing vision loss often face increased medical expenses related to treatments, assistive devices, and accommodations. Without adequate insurance coverage or financial resources, these costs can rapidly become overwhelming.

The economic toll extends beyond healthcare costs and employment matters. Individuals with vision problems frequently require home modifications, transportation assistance, and other support services to maintain their independence and quality of life. These auxiliary expenses compound the financial strain.

The success of the “Eye Can See” initiative serves as an opportunity for advocacy and awareness of eye- related problems within communities. It highlights the importance of prioritising eye care, encouraging early detection, and seeking timely interventions for vision- related issues. This increased awareness leads to a more informed and proactive approach towards healthcare, which benefits not only those directly impacted by vision impairments but also prevents future cases through preventive measures and regular screenings.
