syndrome X!

-

Simply put, Syndrome X is another name for Metabolic Syndrome. The Lifestyle Diseases of Stroke, Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes, Obesity, High Blood Pressure have over the years been on a meteoric rise. Lifestyle diseases are preventable! It therefore ensues that up to 40% -48% of deaths they account for can be avoided or greatly reduced! In line with your resolutions to take responsibility for your health, you never miss your yearly physical or medical examination or check-up. So the report says; 1. You are overweight or obese. 2. Have High Blood Pressure. 3. Abnormal Cholesterol Levels. 4. Blood Sugar: High Fasting Glucose Level. Contending with any one of these risk factors above gives us enough concern and enough to do as it were, to bring our health status back to normal. When you have three or more of these factors manifesting together, they can increase the risk of the lifestyle diseases of Heart Attack, Stroke and Diabetes, and is referred to as Metabolic Syndrome.

Metabolic Syndrome is not a disease itself. It is the cluster of the risk factors. ‘’One thing has now led to another.”

The report card / results is usually a wakeup call for most to make necessary lifestyle changes and I actually witness their commitment to these changes in the first couple of months after their examinations. But thereafter...

So we are back to the fact that we have to imbibe lasting lifestyle behavioural changes. Our outlook must be to constantly remember that promotion and maintenance of our health is a daily choice as well as responsibility. Studies show that the following are risk factors for Metabolic Syndrome: • Obesity, especially abdominal obesity. • Insulin Resistance • Age – the risk of metabolic syndrome increases with age; 40% of people in their 60s have it, whilst less than 10% of people in their 20s have it. • Stress • Lifestyle Changes • Eating too late at night • Sedentary Lifestyles • Family History of Type 2 Diabetes • Unhealthy Lifestyle

Lifestyle Choices to help Prevent and Treat Syndrome X: • Changing eating patterns. Embrace healthier options, adopt a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low calorie, high fibre; portion size, avoid overcompensation of calories after you have skipped meals.

• Regular Physical Exercise will help reduce: Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar Levels, Cholesterol Levels and maintain a healthy weight • Lose Weight • Minimize stress levels As Lifestyle Diseases are on the upward spiral, so has Metabolic Syndrome become more common and widespread.

So it’s all hands on deck. Let us reduce to the barest minimum, the preventable lifestyle diseases which bring along with them huge medical bills, frequent doctors’visits, pain, tons of medication, discomfort, disability, loss of job, emotional trauma to the whole family and eventually lead to premature deaths – Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Stroke, etc. Just by our daily choices of taking personal responsibility for our Health and Wellness!
