DEAR WATCHER OF TIMES: WHERE IS THE TRIGGER OF THE MIND

-

The young man seemingly had everything going for him, a great education capped off with an MBA from one of the worlds elite institutions, a job in a highly competitive global firm parents pray their children work for, a family unit intact with multiple generations of living souls available to lend moral, spiritual and emotional support at any hour. His friends rallied around him like bees to nectar for he was the heart of the party, wherever that maybe. Yet, unbeknown to everyone around was a burden he carried, which manifested suddenly when for days on end, he simply couldn’t find the motivation to get out of bed, no drive to go to work, no desire to speak to anyone and no compulsion to be seen at all. The situation was highlighted in a story I recently read in a copy of Thisday Style where a young columnist was speaking on behalf of millennials to the older generation of what is generally termed as mental illness that seems to be the leading ailment amongst her peers. Depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, schizophrenia, paranoia and a host of other ailments made up a long list of what she told us millennials experienced and which their parents were at a loss to accept or understand. The story reminded me of a young lady I met at the Redemption Camp once who exhibited one of these ailments and as is often the case, most people gave her a wide berth or ran in the opposite direction. Some prayed fervently, casting out unseen demons but something drove me to send everyone away and respond to her with loving care and compassion. Calming her frightened soul, I broke through a moment of clarity and discovered she’d been on medication but hadn’t taken any for lack of money. The God of All Flesh created man as a beautiful complexity of electrons neutrons and protons in the form of flesh and bones. The brain and its complexity is an unfolding enigma and man is yet to grasp the mystery behind the soul and spirit. As science delves deeper into understanding the being called man, the more awe inspiring the Genius behind its creation is. While we may know plenty about how to keep the body healthy, what happens to the mind, one minute intact and whole, the next unwell, is a conundrum man is in a race to better comprehend, for few instances can possibly compare to the anguish any human must feel at the sight of a loved one who is no longer of a sound mind. May God grant us deeper revelation to who and what pulls the trigger of the mind. For your comments, contributions, connect with me here: @TonyeCole1 on Twitter.
