- BY KONYE CHELSEA NWABOGOR

when it comes to class, sophistication and truth to roots, it doesn’t get much better than the arabian Culture. Even with westernization, they have managed to keep in touch with their culture, rocking their jalabiyas and abayas to board meetings and social gatherings.

with The wedding Party sequel shot in Dubai, it came as no surprise when the theme for the grand world premiere was announced; arabian nights. here’s the deal. you have an invite to the biggest social event of the year but you have no idea what to wear. Do you keep it cool and classy or loud and lavish? Questions like this flood your head as the hour draws nigh. It gets worse when you remember it’s all happening at eko hotel & suites tonight. suddenly you develop cold feet because you don’t want to make an epic fashion blunder or worse - become the subject of an unforgiving meme.

Don’t despair! we have broken down the components of the traditional arabian attire for men and women. we even threw in a few style inspirations for good measure too.

get ready, because we are about to show you how to ‘slay’ the grand world premiere of The wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai, tonight.

For men, the complete attire oozes swag from top to bottom. you can’t be in one of these and not carry yourself like royalty. The ensemble has four staple components thus:

• The ‘Thawb’ or ‘Jalabiyya’ – This is the base on which the entire ensemble rests. It is the quintessential arabian man’s outfit. This piece is like a tunic and is usually white. although other neutral colour variations exist.

• The ‘Keffiyeh’ – Depending on location, the colour and pattern of this headscarf could vary from plain white to a red and white check pattern. some have tassels, the size of which reflects the social status of the wearer.

• The ‘agal’ – a simple doubled black cord used to hold the keffiyeh in place. This piece is guaranteed to add the arabian flair to any outfit.

• The ‘Bisht’ – This is pretty much the arabian equivalent of the agbada. as the gulf is mostly warm, this piece is mostly worn on special occasions such as weddings or religious festivals. It is a flowing outer cloak made of wool and is worn over the thawb. Just four items and that’s it! when it all comes together, it is a guaranteed showstopper.

Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of the arabian woman’s outfit; it was designed to shield the grace of a woman’s features. The outfit is mostly simple in neutral colours and sometimes beige. There are two basic parts to the attire.

• The ‘abaya’ – This comes in black but various colour variations abound. essentially, it’s a loose fitting robe-like dress. Most parts of the body are covered except the hands, feet and head.

• The Head Cover – ‘niqab’, ‘shayla’ & ‘al amira’ are varieties of the head cover with the shayla offering the least covering and the al amira covering every part of the head except the eyes. while these are the traditional arabian outfits, you could experiment with these avant-garde combinations or a ‘Jasmine’ look at the grand world premiere of The wedding Party 2: Destination Dubai. go easy on the accessories but don’t go without either.

whatever happens, no saris or turbans – those are Indian garments.
