DEAR WATCHER OF TIMES: WHO WILL ANSWER OUR CRY?

- tonye cole

The short video was a chilling display of what can happen when idle hands have found service in the devils workshop. standing half naked, surrounded by men in military fatigues, a frightened look on their young faces, where men who but a few moments before were caught up in the euphoria of a nascent rebellion. as they were forced to lie face down in muddy water, humiliated, debased and what seemed later to be lifeless, I recalled another short video, more brutal in its act and much more graphic in its suppression of opposition, were a group of what can only be described as “prisoners” sat in hopeless abandon beside an open mass grave and one by one they stood up, walking like lambs to a slaughter, lay down at the edge of the grave, to have their throats slit.

Man’s unending brutality to one another has never ceased to amaze me but I have always wondered if there was a point in the journey to destruction when a timely intervention could have turned away wrath. as our nation strives to come to terms with all the various cries for self actualization, regardless of what name or guise they appear under, whether in yoruba land or amongst the people of the niger Delta, or be it the Igbos or the herdsmen of the north, one thing seems to stand out the most, the voices of a nation cannot be suppressed for people need to and must be heard but a soft word, timely spoken, can not only prevent war, it can also heal deep old open wounds.

The one living god understanding the base nature of the unsanctified heart, described it as desperately wicked. capable of conjuring the most despicable acts of terror, the unchecked soul is irrational in the actions it takes against perceived slights and will unleash a reign of violence upon its rivals. For this reason god raises leaders, men and women of righteous mien who have the heart to stare down evil and inspire ordinary men and women to extraordinary acts of courage. all nations come to a crossroad in time when they need someone, anyone, to step into the crosshairs, listening to the cries of the downtrodden, attentive to the injustice of history past and being a voice to the voiceless. now is the time, for a leader to arise who is capable of bridging the divide of diversity and uniting our people to the greatness we were created to attain. will you answer the call? May god stir our hearts to do what is right for our people. For your comments, contributions, connect with me here: @TonyeCole1 on Twitter.
