Crafting the Nigeria of our dreams.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!
Indeed, what a special 63rd birthday we are celebrating. The journey of Nigeria since gaining its independence is one replete with tales of heroism, resilience, and an undying spirit. But like all epic tales, it’s not without its moments of hardship and trial. We find ourselves at a crossroads where staying positive amidst the many challenges seems almost Herculean.
The stark reality is hard to ignore – over the last couple of years, our issues seem to have become more complex. Our infrastructure struggles to meet our needs, inflation continues to rise, and our political system grapples with ensuring justice and inclusion for all. Particularly poignant is the plight of our youth, with millions overwhelmed with frustration and anger due to lack of opportunities. I know this isn’t exactly what you want to hear right now, but focusing solely on these challenges would be a disservice to Nigeria’s vibrant energy and potential.
Despite the gloom, there are numerous young Nigerians who are proving that the spirit of Nigeria is unbreakable. Darkness only exists so stars can shine. And shine, our youths have done regardless. Their tenacity, innovation, and drive to rise above adversities are nothing short of commendable. Look around, and you’ll see that despite the odds, they are carving a niche for themselves in numerous fields. From the global sensation Afrobeat has become, thanks to our talented musicians, to the captivating stories Nollywood brings to screens worldwide. Our athletes wear our colours proudly on international stages, while our tech innovators design the future. Our diaspora, scattered like seeds in the wind, are growing roots in foreign soils and uplifting our flag high with their accomplishments. It is so beautiful to see. The internet age has also provided an invaluable tool for our youth, enabling them to access a global reservoir of knowledge and collaborate with like-minded individuals worldwide. They are devising groundbreaking solutions, starting businesses, and impacting their communities in ways that were previously unthinkable.
As we acknowledge these victories, we must also recognise that we have a responsibility. Every individual blessed with influence — our celebrities, social media gurus, journalists — has the onus to channel their platforms into educating and engaging our youth.
This is a clarion call to inspire constructive discussions that will propel Nigeria into the prosperous future we all envision.
Our narrative must evolve. Nigeria is not just about jollof rice, fraudulent stereotypes, or leadership challenges. It’s about the innovation, the talent, the drive, and the spirit that refuses to be suppressed. It’s about the potential we hold and the global marks we are already making.
Imagine a Nigeria where the energy of our youth powers our industries, their innovative solutions tackle our most pressing challenges, and their voices shape our policies. It’s not just a dream; with the right policies and a collective commitment to the next generation, Nigeria’s aspiration to become one of the world’s largest 20 economies is more than attainable.
I believe in a Nigeria where our challenges will become stepping stones, propelling us to heights we once only dreamed of.
Happy Independence Day celebrations to every Nigerian, young and old, near and far! The road ahead might be challenging, but our history proves we’re tougher. I am filled with optimism and hope that someday, we will emerge greater and stronger than ever before. Have a splendid week ahead, and may the undying spirit of Nigeria continue to light our path.
Love,
