NCC Donates ICT Books to Bayero University
Emma Okonji The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the telecoms industry regulator, has donated 87 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) books to Bayero University Kano (BUK), to enhance teaching and learning.
The donation is part of NCC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to spread digital dividends to tertiary institutions across the country.
The donation, which was received by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, was carried out by NCC Board Commissioner, Mohammed Bintube on behalf of the commission.
The books will adorn the university’s ICT Centre named T.Y Danjuma ICT Centre. The centre consists of a post graduate school, Departments of Information Technology (IT), Software Engineering and Computer Science. The gesture from the NCC is spread across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
According to Bintube, “NCC is honoured and privileged to be present at one of the citadels of learning in Nigeria. We appreciate the efforts made in ICT within the University.”
The commissioner applauded the Vice Chancellor and the university’s management for keeping up with the trends in ICT with the rest of the world. He explained that the ICT book donation is part of the project of the Commission to fill the dearth of educational materials within the ICT sector in the country.
Head, Policy and Research at NCC, Dr. Henry Nkemadu, who was part of the delegation that donated the books, said the telecom revolution in the country, which has resulted in the unparalleled surge of growth from 400,000 connected lines in 2001, to 139 million connected lines currently, needs to continue to grow. This Nkemadu added, needs specialised skill sets to sustain and drive more growth and development in the sector.
“The thought of this project is to develop local capacity that will contribute to the ICT sector and the Nigerian economy,” he added.
