Alumni Inaugurate Library as Command School Turns 50

- Rebecca Ejifoma

The alumni of Army/Command Children School, Sabo Yaba have renovated and inaugurated the school library as part of activities to mark its 50th anniversary.

The old pupils, including set 1969 and below, graced the occasion at the Ann’s Barracks, Yaba with more pledges to improve the quality of education in their alma mater.

According to an alumnus and Managing Director of Aramitch Vigor Consults Ltd, Mr. Mike Kelikume, the school made them what they are today. “Because of what we went through during our time, we the old pupils came together to see how we could add value to this great school.

“The first thing we thought of was renovating, rehabilitating and putting the library to good use with up-to-date books. In addition, we want to make it a world-class standard for elementary level.”

Kelikume commended the army authorities from the directorate of the army education and old pupils in diaspora for their support for the school at 50. “It will be a regular exercise for us. We shall inform more people and we expect nothing less than 500 ex-pupils at the reunion dinner this April.”

Meanwhile, having renovated the building, provided new furniture like chairs, desks and shelves, one of the coordinators and alumna, Mrs. Adefunke Kuyorun nee Adejunwo of set 1971, said they have decided to computerise the library.

“We have unanimously agreed to computerise the library because it is the centre of knowledge. If the school has a formidable library, the pupils can pick books from there. It is a wealth of knowledge.”

Established in 1966 as Army Children Primary School, the alumni have named the library after the first Headmistress of the school, Mrs. C.O. Isaacs. “Hence, we have come together to see how we can maintain the standard we had during our time,” Kuyorun said. Among the many surprise packages for the school is an all sponsored 12-day trip of the best debater, Ebube Onu to the United Kingdom. The primary five pupil will leave on August 2 to return on the 14th.

Other dignitaries present at the event included the Commander Corp of Nigerian Army Education, Brigadier General Lawal Fascari Abdulahi; Colonel Aminu Abdu; Colonel Thoho Bello; the founder of Mydrim Art Gallery, Mrs. Sinmidele Ogunsanya, among others.
