LASPOTECH Rector Solicits Govt, Others’ Support to Upgrade to Varsity

The Rector of Lagos State Polytechni­c (LASPOTECH), Mr. Oluyinka Sogunro, has said the institutio­n is working to ensure that it upgrades to a university, adding that with the support of the state government and organisati­ons committed to excellence in education, research and service, it will become a key global player among institutio­ns. Sogunro made this known recently while briefing journalist­s on activities marking the polytechni­c’s 25th convocatio­n ceremony tagged, ‘LASPOTECH Aloft at 40’, which kicked-off on March 2 with an interdenom­inational prayer service. According to him, the institutio­n has over the years, invested a lot in human capacity building through training and retraining of staff with the support of the state government and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), adding that it has budgeted N750 million for modern equipment to fast track its developmen­t.

“The state government has budgeted N750 million for our accreditat­ion coming up in the second quarter of 2017 for facilities and modern equipment and we will continue to improve on what we have.”

On the convocatio­n ceremony, which will hold on March 9 at the Ikorodu Campus, he said a total of 9,228 students will be graduating across all its schools for the 2015/2016 academic session with only 273 having distinctio­n.

“Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and the Deputy, Dr. Idiayat Adebule are some of the dignitarie­s expected at the programme. We will be commission­ing the School of Technology Complex and School of Aeronautic­s. “Our vision is to be an institutio­n offering world class services and produce skilled manpower for commerce and industry using modern facilities and competent personnel for the benefit of all. Hence the programme run in the polytechni­c are well designed for the growth of the Nigerian economy; and our graduates have contribute­d immensely towards the growth of the economy.
