Family Decries Refusal to Let Kanu Entertain Visitors

- David-Chyddy Eleke in Awka

The family members to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have cried out over refusal by the prisons authorities to let Nnamdi Kanu receive visitors in his cell.

A press statement sent to THISDAY in Awka and signed by the younger brother of the IPOB leader, Prince Emmanuel Kanu stated that prisons officials working in concert with the Department of State Services (DSS) have limited the time for Kanu to receive visitors to one hour a day, for five days a week.

The family said they were surprised over the directive, just as they feared that it may be a new ploy to do in the freedom fighter and reduce his growing popularity.

The release frowned on the directive, saying that even the most hardened criminals in the same prison, including Boko Haram terrorists were allowed to receive visitors, five hours a day for seven days of the week.

Part of the release reads, “We observed with great dismay the conspiracy by the DSS and the Prison Authorities through their prison wardens to stop Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from receiving visitors in Kuje Prison, Abuja.

“The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and others detained illegally alongside with him are only allowed to receive visitors for 1hour a day from Monday to Friday in a week while other inmates were always allowed to receive visitors 5 hours in a day from Monday to Sunday, 7 days a week.”

The family said the development is a huge embarrassment on British government who they said have been denied access to Nnamdi Kanu whom they sought to visit in Kuje Prison recently. They accused prison wardens of being used to perfect the plot to deny Kanu any visitor.
