President of Rotary Club of Lagos, Mrs. Gladys Modupe Sasore, has called on corporate organisation, nongovernmental organisations, writers associations, journalists and wellmeaning individuals to support and promote reading clubs in schools.

Sasore, who disclosed this at the Read programme grand finale held at the Pinefield School, Lekki Phase 1, said this would go a long way to keep the flame of reading burning and spreading among pupils and students.

She also thanked the Rotary Club of Lagos and Quramo Publishing company which she said collaborated for embarking on “the project in order to highlight and create necessary awareness to observe decline noticeable in the reading culture of our pupils and students in trying to address the decline and encourage restoration.

“We used practical advocacy concept of taking Read to primary schools, invite our esteemed readers to read to the pupils and emphasise to them the importance of reading beyond school text books.

“Reading is very important in the life of a child, for regular reading exposes children to a larger more diverse vocabulary and greater variety of sentence structure than teachers or parents just talking to them. Similarly, it develops their knowledge, phonological awareness and memory, all of which are essential skills that will lead them to future academic success. In addition, reading promotes self-esteem confidence. Indeed, it has been said that if you can read, you can do anything, dream anything and be anything.
