SON Tasks Tyre Dealers on Quality
Worried about the alarming rate of road accidents caused by substandard tyres, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has taken the gospel of standardisation to the heart of the tyre industry in Nigeria.
The Director General, SON, Osita Aboloma, during one day workshop on safety and quality requirements of tyres at the Africa tyre village, trade fair complex in Lagos, explained that the forum was part of efforts to promote the economic well-being of residents of the state. He said that the workshop is apt considering the proliferation of substandard tyres in the country which has caused preventable loss of lives and property in recent times. The SON chief executive who was represented by the Director, Management Systems and Certification, SON, Oluremi Ayeni, said the agency’s vision is to improve life through standardisation and quality assurance to promote consumer confidence and global confidence and competitiveness of Nigerian products and services through standardisation and quality assurance.
In her words, “What we are out here to do today is part of our stakeholder engagement to educate the distributors and dealers in the tyre industry.
We have said over the years that educating stakeholders on issues that pertain to their aspect in the economy would go a long way in having a buy-in. we have been in discussion with the leadership of this market and you will know they are all excited to be part of it.
So to that effect, we are having technical sessions to educate them on the peculiarities of the product they are dealing with, because the key issue is about safety for road users. As we ply our roads with tyres, we need to have a proper knowledge of what tyres can be when not properly used. This is just the starting point because they are the main entry point of tyres into the country.”
