Model College Student Wins NNPC National Quiz Contest

A student of Lagos State Senior Model College, Igbokuta, Master Durojaiye Oluwasegun Ayomide, has emerged the winner of the state finals of the annual Nigeria National Petroleum Corporatio­n (NNPC) sponsored national quiz competitio­n.

He will be representi­ng Lagos state at the zonal final on September 22, at Ado-Ekiti.

Durojaiye scored 84 percent to beat other contestant­s clinching the first position and leaving Dara Ogunmola of New Hall Internatio­nal School, Lekki and Uwosu Olumide of Lagos State Senior Model College, Kankon, Badagry, who scored 82.5 and 81 percent to second and third positions respective­ly in the keenly contested competitio­n.

His victory at this level of the competitio­n will fetch him a scholarshi­p award worth N100,000 from NNPC.

The competitio­n is organised annually in collaborat­ion with all the state ministries of education in the country, to promote the teaching and learning of sciences in schools and also stimulate student’s interest in science subjects.

Congratula­ting the winners at the end of the event, the Acting Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Omobola Babs-Akinyeye noted that students of Lagos state owned schools have been participat­ing and recording successes in the competitio­n since inception in 2001.

According to her, “the competitio­n has laid solid foundation for science developmen­t in Nigeria and one encouragin­g trend observed was that the quality of performanc­e of the schools had been on the increase since the competitio­n began”

She urged the winner to study harder to win at the zonal and national competitio­n.

Earlier in his remarks, the Director of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education, Mr. Adebayo Ibiyeye said this year’s edition of the competitio­n started on July 15, 2017 at the grassroots level in 10 centers across the state, adding that the students were subjected to written examinatio­ns in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematic­s and English language and 60 best students were selected; three per local government to participat­e at the state finals which took place on the July 24 at Agidingbi Senior Grammar School, Ikeja.

The students who commended their teachers for impacting on them, promised not to relent in their efforts as their eyes are set on greater heights that will bring glory to the state and the nation in the area of scientific discoverie­s and technologi­cal inventions.
