RBC Beams the Spotlight on Alakija’s Book, Reviews Adeniyi’s Against the Run of Play

University of Marriage by the world’s richest black woman, Folorunso Alakija, was the Rainbow Book Club Book-of-themonth for June. Single and married folks gathered at the monthly reading at Le Meridien, Ogeyi Place, Port Harcourt, gave their candid opinion of the book relating the author’s points to real life experiences.

The moderator, Mrs. Amie Georgewill, spoke on the benefits of trust in every marriage and the roles of men and women in a home. Debate on the positive and negative effects of the western way of life to marriages was extensive. An important aspect of the 21st century marriage, which was broadly dwelt upon, was the fact that today’s woman strives to be financially comfortable thereby reducing her dependence on her husband and consequently, shifting the dynamics of the relationship. Singles present weighed in on the discussion, speaking on their understanding of marriage, the concept of true love and the roles of both spouses in the family.

The book reading not only created an environment for productive discussion on the marriage relationship but exposed attendees to useful tips on how to apply and survive in a university from where no one ever graduates – MARRIAGE.

The July book reading at the same venue last Saturday discussed Segun Adeniyi’s

Against the Run of Play, a book on how the ruling PDP party was defeated by the opposing APC party. As is usually the case when Nigerian discuss the politics of their country, the conversation was animated. Amongst the factors posited in the book that caused the defeat of the incumbent was the role of wives of office-holders in the tenure of the serving husband. Mrs Goodluck Jonathan and Mrs Michelle Obama came under scrutiny at this point. Another point widely dwelt on was the need for Nigerian leaders to think of the far reaching effect of their decisions and for citizens to think of our collective advancement above personal gain. The saga of the Chibok Girls was also passionately discussed.

The moderator, Mrs Bimbo Aigbedion, skilfully guided the discussion through the 12 chapters of this topical book. "The RBC's book of the month for August is Okey Ndibe's Don't Look an American in the Eye.
