The Kaduna State Quality Assurance Board has evaluated 1,710 public and private primary and secondary schools in the state in the past three years.

The Executive Director of the board, Mrs. Mureen Wyom, who disclosed this to journalists in Kaduna, said the evaluation of schools was geared towards ensuring quality teaching, learning and management of schools in the state.

According to her, 674 schools were evaluated in 2014, 602 in 2015 and 434 in 2016, with the goal of improving the quality of education delivery in the state.

Wyom explained that school evaluation is an annual exercise designed to assess the performance of schools with respect to quality to enable the state plan for a better outcome the following year.

She said after the evaluation, the board issues a report called the ‘State of Education Report’ indicating the quality of education delivery system and management in each school within a year and it is submitted to the office of the governor and other relevant agencies for appropriate action and interventions where necessary.

She added that the evaluation focused on three components - the quality of provisions, the impact of leadership and the learning outcome.

Wyom said after considering everything in schools, the questions asked are whether the students are acquiring any skill that will make them useful citizens. “That is why our major concern is whether the students are learning when we go out on evaluation. Are they acquiring skills? If they are not, then something is wrong. Is the curriculum meeting their needs?

“We also ask if the learning environment is conducive and if the learners are being supported and encouraged. We also ask if the leadership of the schools are working with relevant stakeholders.

“Our desire is to ensure that students acquire the necessary skills in primary and secondary schools that will prepare them for advanced studies,” she said.
