Rotary Club Donates N7m Water Bore-hole to FCT Community
An ultra-modern water borehole, valued at N7 million has been installed at the Daki-Biyu Community in Jabi, Abuja.
The water facility, donated by the Rotary International PolioPlus Community is intended to eradicate water borne diseases there.
Until now, the slum dwellers of Baushe Council, Gwarimpa Ward sourced their water from a stream, putting them at risk of contracting water borne diseases.
The Chairman, PolioPlus Committee of Rotary International, Michael McGovern, who visited the country, unveiled the borehole, which was presented to the head of the Dakachim Daki- Biyu community, Chief Ishaku Lamishi. McGovern said the borehole was a gift from the more than one million members of the Rotary community. The estimated cost of drilling the solar powered borehole is N7 million.
“We are founded on service delivery to communities that like to work with us. I have drank the water and I look forward to hearing many people drink this water for years to come. Rotary is in support of this initiative and we implore other private people to make a difference. Provision of clean water is a priority for Rotary worldwide as well as eradicating Polio. “We had done several boreholes like this in many Nigerian communities that lack good drinking water,” McGovern said.
The Chairman Nigerian National Polo Plus Committee, Dr. Tunji Funso, said that the project was tailored to the requirement of the people of the community, who, according to him, used to buy water at the cost of N100 per gallon from hawkers.
Chief Lamishi expressed gratitude to Rotary International, particularly McGovern for travelling from the US to handover the borehole to his community.
He assured that the gift would be properly maintained to protect people of his community from the risk of water borne diseases.
